What a Free Mixcloud Account Won't Let You Do

Mixcloud is one of the few places where a DJ can legally upload a set full of other artists' records, because it holds licences to stream that music and pays royalties when the tracks are played. The record labels behind those licences attach conditions to free listening, and anyone who uses Mixcloud without paying runs into them quickly:

• Limited seeking: you can rewind or skip ahead only six times in a rolling hour.
• Limited replays: each show can be replayed four times in a rolling fourteen days.
• Hidden tracklists: track names only appear as each track starts playing.
• No downloads: offline listening is a Premium feature, and even then it only works inside the Mixcloud app.

A mix you download here is an ordinary audio file on your own device. It plays in whatever music player you like, where you can jump to any point, loop your favourite transition, and replay it as often as you want.

Full Sets, Start to Finish

Mixcloud is built for long-form audio: two-hour club sets, weekly radio shows, all-night recordings. This tool has no length limit, so the show comes back as one complete file from the first track to the last, not a clipped preview.

Length does change the file size. A four-hour set is a much bigger download than a thirty-minute podcast, so on a phone it is worth being on Wi-Fi and having some free space before you start.

Mixcloud to MP3? Why the File Is M4A

The file you get is M4A, which is AAC audio, the same format Mixcloud streams in. It is not an MP3, but for almost everyone that changes nothing: iPhones, iPads, Android phones, Macs and Windows PCs all play M4A out of the box, as do VLC and most music apps.

If you do need an MP3, say for an older car stereo, a USB stick for a club player, or DJ software that only takes MP3, any audio converter can turn the M4A into one in a moment. Converting from one compressed format to another will not add any quality that wasn't there, so keep the M4A as your master copy.

Finding the Show Link

Every Mixcloud show has its own address: mixcloud.com/, then the creator's username, then the show's name. That link is what this tool needs. A few kinds of Mixcloud link look similar but behave differently:

• A show link like mixcloud.com/creator/show-name/ works. Copy it from the address bar, or from the share option on the show.
• A private link to an unlisted show works too. If a creator shared an unlisted show with you, paste the link they sent.
• A profile link like mixcloud.com/creator/ lists all of a creator's shows, so there is no single file behind it. Open one show and copy its link.
• A live link like mixcloud.com/live/creator points to a broadcast in progress, which isn't a finished file yet.

Saving Mixcloud Shows on Your Phone or Computer

On iPhone & iPad

1. Copy the link: open the show in Safari and copy the address bar, or use the share option in the Mixcloud app to copy its link.
2. Come back to this page: open it in Safari, paste the link into the box at the top, and tap Download.
3. Save the audio: tap Save. Safari puts the file in the Downloads folder of the Files app, where it plays straight away; from there you can share it to a music app of your choice.

On Android

1. Copy the link: open the show in Chrome and copy the address bar, or copy the link from the Mixcloud app's share option.
2. Come back to this page: paste the link into the box at the top and tap Download.
3. Save the audio: tap Save. It goes to the phone's Download folder and shows up in your music player.

On PC, Mac & Chromebook

1. Copy the link: open the show on mixcloud.com and copy the address bar.
2. Come back to this page: paste the link into the box and click Download.
3. Save the audio: click Save. It goes to your browser's Downloads folder, ready to open in any music player.

Keeping the Tracklist

A downloaded mix is the audio only. The tracklist, which is often half the reason people save a DJ set, stays on the show's Mixcloud page. Free listeners see each track name appear as it plays, while Premium subscribers can see the full list before pressing play. If you want to know what you are listening to later, copy the tracklist into a note next to the file, or put it in the file's comments field in your music app.

Who Saves Mixcloud Shows

• DJs backing up their own sets: a copy of every show you uploaded, independent of your Mixcloud account.
• Listeners going offline: a favourite radio show for a flight, a long drive, or a gym with no signal, without paying for Premium just for that.
• Crate diggers: a set to replay closely while working out the tracks and transitions.
• Fans of a show that might disappear: creators do delete old uploads, and a removed show cannot be downloaded later.

Shows That Won't Download

1. Exclusive shows. They are locked to the paying subscribers of a creator's channel, and this tool only downloads shows anyone can play.
2. Live broadcasts still on air. Wait until the stream ends and the creator publishes the recording as a show.
3. Removed shows. Once a creator or Mixcloud takes a show down, there is nothing left to fetch. Every request is made live, so there is no saved copy.
4. Profile or search links. They list many shows. Open one and copy its own link.
5. Extra text around the link. If the link came inside a message, keep only the part that starts with https://.

The Music Inside a Mix

A DJ mix is really dozens of other people's records. Mixcloud's licence lets that music stream on Mixcloud, but it does not pass any rights on to you. Downloading a public mix for your own listening is ordinary personal use. Uploading it to YouTube or SoundCloud, selling it, or cutting individual tracks out of it for reuse is a different matter, and it can infringe on the rights of the artists and labels whose music is in the set, whichever tool saved the file.
