Meme images

The classic 9GAG post: a still picture, usually with a caption baked into the image. It comes back as the image file 9GAG stored for that post, at its full size. A screenshot, by contrast, is limited to your screen's resolution and picks up whatever the app draws around it.

Video posts

Clips with sound, from a few seconds to a few minutes long. These download as an MP4 with the audio track intact, so they play on any phone, computer, or TV that plays video at all.

Animated GIF posts

The short silent loops 9GAG labels as GIFs. They look like GIFs in the feed, but the file behind them is a video, and that is what you get: a small MP4 that loops in most players. The next section explains why.

Why a 9GAG GIF Arrives as an MP4

The GIF format is decades old and very inefficient for moving pictures. A few seconds of animation saved as a true .gif can easily run to several megabytes, while the same loop as a video file is a fraction of that and looks better. 9GAG moved its animated posts over to video years ago for exactly that reason, so they load instantly in the feed.

So when you download an animated post, you get the file 9GAG really keeps, which is an MP4. For most uses that is the better file anyway. WhatsApp and Telegram both send GIFs as short videos behind the scenes, so the MP4 works there as it is. If you do need a genuine .gif, for a forum or an older app that insists on one, any GIF converter can turn the MP4 into one in a few seconds.

What Stays on 9GAG

On 9GAG the joke is not always inside the picture. Plenty of posts lean on the title written above them, and on a busy post the top comments are half the fun. Neither of those is part of the file. What you download is the image, video, or animation itself, so if a meme only works with its title, copy the title too, or save a screenshot of the comment that made it.

Pasting a 9GAG Link

Every 9GAG post lives at an address that starts 9gag.com/gag/ followed by a short code of letters and numbers. That code is the post ID, and it is all this tool needs. You will see a few variations, and all of them work:

• The plain link: 9gag.com/gag/ plus the ID.
• With the title: some links carry words from the post title after the ID. Leave them in.
• From the Share button: links copied in the app usually end in ?utm_source=copy_link or similar. Paste them as copied, no trimming needed.

What will not work is a link to a page of many posts. An interest page, a tag page, someone's profile, or the home feed itself has no single file behind it. Open the post you are after and copy its own /gag/ link.

Saving 9GAG Posts on Your Phone or Computer

On iPhone & iPad

1. Copy the link: in the 9GAG app, tap Share under the post and copy the link. In Safari, copy the address bar.
2. Come back to this page: open it in Safari, paste the link into the box at the top, and tap Download.
3. Save the file: tap Save. Safari puts it in the Downloads folder of the Files app; open it there, tap the Share icon, and choose Save Video or Save Image to move it into Photos.

On Android

1. Copy the link: in the 9GAG app, tap Share under the post and copy the link. In Chrome, copy the address bar.
2. Come back to this page: paste the link into the box at the top and tap Download.

Before You Repost Something From 9GAG

9GAG is an aggregator more than a studio. A large share of what reaches its feed was made somewhere else first, on Reddit, X, TikTok, or a comic artist's own site, and was then posted to 9GAG by someone else. That makes no difference if you are saving a meme to send to a friend. It matters a great deal if you plan to repost it publicly, put it in a video, or use it to promote anything.

Before you do, try to find where it started. Running the image, or a still frame from a video, through a reverse image search such as Google Lens or TinEye usually turns up older copies, and the oldest one tends to lead to the creator. Credit that person rather than the 9GAG account, and ask them before any commercial use. Redistributing someone's work without permission carries real risk no matter which tool saved the file.

When a Download Doesn't Come Through

• The link is not a single post. Interest, tag, and profile pages list many posts. Open one post and copy its /gag/ link.
• The post was deleted. Once it is removed from 9GAG, there is no file left to fetch. Every request is made live, so there is no saved copy to fall back on.
• There is extra text with the link. If the link came inside a message, keep only the part that starts with https://.
• The link is cut off. Links shared in some apps get truncated. Make sure the whole post code after /gag/ made it into the box.
