Loom Sometimes Has a Download Button, Sometimes Doesn't

Unlike most platforms, Loom isn't built around zero native download options. Recorders on paid Loom plans can open a video's link settings and switch on a toggle that lets viewers download it directly from the page. The catch is that this defaults to off, and plenty of recorders never touch it, either because they're on a plan without the option or simply never think to enable it for a video meant to be watched, not saved.

What Loom Is Actually Used For

Loom records the screen and webcam at the same time and uploads the result as a shareable link, built around replacing meetings and long written explanations with a short recorded walkthrough. That makes the content behind a typical Loom link work-related by default: a bug report, an onboarding walkthrough, feedback on a document, a recorded standup update, the kind of thing worth keeping a permanent copy of, rather than casual entertainment.

Public Links, Specific People & Password-Protected Videos

Loom offers a few different sharing modes for the same recording. A public link works for anyone who has it. Sharing with specific people restricts playback to only the email addresses the recorder added. Sharing to a workspace Space keeps a video inside an organization. And on paid plans, a recorder can add a password on top of any of those.

This tool can only reach what a public link exposes. A video restricted to specific people, a private Space, or protected by a password isn't accessible outside Loom's own access check, the same limitation every external tool runs into.

Loom's Share Link Format

A Loom share link follows the pattern loom.com/share/[video-id], a long alphanumeric ID unique to that recording. Embed links use a slightly different path, loom.com/embed/[video-id], for the same video wrapped for an iframe. Either format, pasted into the box above, resolves to the same underlying file.

The steps are nearly identical everywhere, copy a link, paste it, tap Save, but where the finished file lands depends on the device.

On iPhone & iPad

1. Copy the link: Open the Loom link in Safari and copy the URL from the address bar.
2. Paste it: Come back to this page in Safari, paste the link into the box at the top, and tap Download.
3. Save it: Tap Save on the video. Safari adds it to its Downloads list; from there, tap the file, tap the Share icon, and choose Save Video to move it into the Photos app.

On Android

1. Copy the link: Open the Loom link in Chrome and copy the URL from the address bar.
2. Paste it: Come back to this page, paste the link into the box at the top, and tap Download.
3. Save it: Tap Save on the video. It downloads straight into the phone's internal Download folder and shows up in Gallery within a few seconds.

On PC, Mac & Chromebook

Why Save a Copy of a Video Meant for Work

Work tools change accounts, permissions, and retention policies more often than most people expect. A recorder can leave a company and lose access to their own past recordings, a workspace can restructure its sharing permissions, or an old video can simply get cleaned out during an archive purge. Is It Legal to Download a Loom Video?

Saving a work video you were sent, for reference or personal record-keeping, is standard practice and generally low-risk, especially inside the same organization it was shared within. Redistributing someone else's recording outside its intended audience, or using it publicly without permission, is a separate situation, particularly since Loom videos often contain sensitive screen content never meant to be public. The recorder keeps ownership and control over who a video is meant for, regardless of who has a local copy.
