Lemon8 Started Out as a Different App Entirely

Lemon8 is a ByteDance product, the same company behind TikTok, but it didn't launch under that name. It first appeared in Japan in May 2020 as an app called Sharee, then was rebranded to Lemon8 in September 2021 after gaining traction across Southeast Asian markets. ByteDance pushed the rebranded app into the US and UK in February 2023, where it became one of the most-downloaded lifestyle apps on the App Store within weeks.

Built to Compete With RedNote, Not Instagram

Lemon8's card-style layout, mixing photos, short video, and layered text captions, was built specifically as ByteDance's response to the popularity of Xiaohongshu (RedNote), the Chinese lifestyle-discovery app, rather than as a direct Instagram competitor. That's why Lemon8 posts feel closer in format to a RedNote post than to a typical Instagram feed post, built around fashion, beauty, food, and travel content presented as browsable cards rather than a straight video timeline.

Video Posts vs. Photo Posts

A Lemon8 post can be a single video or a swipeable set of photos, and this tool handles both depending on what the link actually resolves to. Pasting a video post's link returns the video file; pasting a photo post's link returns the images in the set.

No Built-In Save Option

Lemon8 doesn't include an in-app option to save a post's video or photos to a device, so screenshotting has been the usual workaround, which downsamples every image or frame to the screen's resolution instead of the original upload. Getting the Post Onto Your Device

The steps are nearly identical everywhere, copy a link, paste it, tap Save, but where the finished file lands depends on the device.

On iPhone & iPad

1. Copy the link: Open the post in the Lemon8 app, tap Share, and tap Copy Link.
2. Paste it: Come back to this page in Safari, paste the link into the box at the top, and tap Download.
3. Save it: Tap Save on the file. Safari adds it to its Downloads list; from there, tap the file, tap the Share icon, and choose Save Video or Save Image to move it into the Photos app.

On Android

1. Copy the link: In Lemon8, tap Share and select Copy Link.
2. Paste it: Come back to this page, paste the link into the box at the top, and tap Download.
3. Save it: Tap Save on the file. It downloads straight into the phone's internal Download folder and shows up in Gallery within a few seconds.

What This Lemon8 Video Downloader Can and Can't Do

If a Post Won't Download

Pasting a link to a profile page instead of the specific post won't work, since the tool needs the exact post's URL. A post that's been made private or removed since it was shared has nothing left on Lemon8's servers to fetch. And a link copied from an in-app share sheet that hasn't fully resolved yet occasionally needs to be re-copied.

Is It Legal to Download a Lemon8 Post?

Saving a public post for personal viewing or reference, like following along with a recipe or tutorial offline, is standard fair-use territory. Reposting someone else's photos or video as original work, or using them commercially without permission, is a separate situation that carries real legal risk. The creator keeps ownership of what they posted no matter who has a local copy of it.

Downloaded filenames rarely describe what's actually in them, so anyone saving more than a handful of posts tends to end up with a folder of similarly named files fast.
